What is the Best Height for a High Bay Light?

Writer: Genesis One LightingGenesis One Lighting

When installing high bay lighting in commercial and industrial spaces, one of the most critical factors to consider is the mounting height. Properly positioning high bay lights ensures optimal illumination, efficiency, and safety.

Understanding High Bay Lighting

High bay lights are designed for spaces with high ceilings, typically ranging from 6 meters to over 15 meters . These lights are commonly used in warehouses, factories, gymnasiums, retail stores, and other large facilities where powerful, uniform illumination is required.

Recommended Mounting Heights for High Bay Lights

The appropriate mounting height depends on the type of high bay fixture and the lux levels required. Here are general guidelines:

  • 6-8 meters: Use 100W to 150W LED high bay lights.

  • 8-10 meters: Use 150W to 200W LED high bay lights.

  • 10-12 meters: Use 200W to 300W LED high bay lights.

  • Above 12 meters: Use 300W or higher LED high bay lights

Factors Affecting High Bay Light Placement

Several factors influence the ideal mounting height and spacing of high bay lights:

1. Light Distribution and Beam Angle

  • Wide beam angles (90° to 120°): Suitable for lower mounting heights (6-10m) as they spread light more evenly.

  • Narrow beam angles (60° or less): Ideal for high ceilings (10m+) as they concentrate light downward to prevent dispersion loss.

2. Lumen Output

  • The higher the mounting height, the more lumens the fixture should provide to ensure adequate illuminance at ground level.

  • Example: A warehouse with 12m ceilings typically requires 200W+ high bays with 25,000 lumens or more.

3. Spacing Between Fixtures

  • For even coverage, high bay lights should be spaced appropriately:

    • 6-8 meters height → Space fixtures 4-5 meters apart.

    • 8-10 meters height → Space fixtures 5-7 meters apart.

    • 10-12 meters height → Space fixtures 7-9 meters apart.

4. Application and Work Area Requirements

  • Warehouses with tall shelving may need higher lumen output and a narrower beam angle to penetrate deep shelving rows.

  • Open spaces like gymnasiums benefit from uniform lighting with wide beam angles.
